Rule of 72
The Rule of 72 says that to find the number of years required to double your money at a given interest rate, you just divide the interest rate into 72. The Rule of 72 does take into consideration that interest is compounded annually. The Rule of 72 is remarkably accurate, as long as the interest rate is less than about twenty percent; at higher rates the error starts to become significant. Like any rule of thumb, this rule is only good for approximations.
For example, if you want to know how long it will take to double your money at 20 percent interest, simply divide 20 into 72 and you will see that it takes 3.6 years. The following examples below will illustrate how the Rule of 72 works.
